This course is for the individual who is in a position of responsibility and group leadership in the backcountry who currently holds a WFR from any agency.  Although the specialized skills like BLS CPR and diagnostics are only executed if the Responder has the equipment, the knowledge on how to use them and what vitals can tell us about patient health is extremely important.  A portion of this course will be spent reviewing the BLS, Airway Management, and Oxygen delivery methods as it applies to an evolving scenario and as equipment becomes available.  Skills will be practiced then executed in course scenarios in a “real time” method to allow for the evolution of patient assessment.  In addition to an advanced skill set, the TIME invested in this course forces participants to spend more energy practicing, exploring, and creating scenarios that are relevant to their concerns in backcountry emergencies.  Students develop a passion for scenario based learning and will be challenged through extended scenarios with added stressors and human factors.  The scenarios increase in capacity and intensity to further introduce WFR Responders to the challenges of time, stress, emotions, and patient focused care on the great group health.

Our Class is OUTDOORS!

We take great pride in using our outdoor classroom places to enhance the content of the Wilderness First Aid program.  Every minute spent outdoors adds real life value to the content.    This varies on location and season. All courses will have a back-up indoor option for when weather is unfavourable for the less active content.  We will ALWAYS have outdoor components even if we are set up indoors for some of the content.  There will be some theory content in the WFR program that will require indoor time and there WILL be homework!

What to Bring?

Each participant bring a “day pack” that would be similar to what you would carry on a day trip or work trip outdoors so that you can use items you would likely have with you.  There is no wrong way to do anything when you are improvising.  You will only use what you have.  First Aid consumable supplies will be provided.

• A detailed WHAT TO BRING list will be sent to course participants upon registration and closer to the course date.
• Students must bring their own food, water, camp chairs, and personal needs.
• Pen and paper

Pre-Requisites?  Current 80hr Wilderness First Responder (any agency) – must provide copy upon registration. 

What you need to bring with you?

• Canadian Red Cross Emergency Responder, Wilderness, and BLS manual (if you have)
• Any manual from your previous courses
• Stethoscope & Blood Pressure Cuff (if you do not have – please let us know!)
• Clothing layers to be used in scenarios – a full outfit of clothing that could be stained, cut, or ruined in a scenario
• Pen and materials to write with

What is provided:

• Supporting documents for course content
• First Aid supplies (mimic a first aid kit) to be used in class
• Red Cross WFR Certification – Valid 3 years
• Intermediate First Aid (CSA Z-121017) – Valid 3 years
• BLS CPR – Valid 1 year
