Course Location:

Sept. 25-27| 40hr WFA UPGRADE/RECERT inc. CAMPING!

$295.00

This course expands beyond the original 20hr RFA to include skills you have yet to learn.  This is an industry standard for people in roles of leadership, for those doing multi day overnight trips in the backcountry, for anyone who partakes in high risk activities, and for those who may be faced with triage situations in multi-stressor situations.   This course is for YOU if you just want to know more, do better, and feel more prepared!

SCHEDULE:

  • Friday Sept. 25: 6:30pm OVERNIGHT to Sunday Sept. 27th 5:00pm
  • This course is intended to be a camping course that will allow the group to adjust our daily schedule to accommodate an evening and extended scenario into the night as a challenge for leadership and long term care.  Campsite fees are included in the registration cost.  You are welcome to book your own private sites however no refund or discount will be issued.

LOCATION:  Blackstrap Provincial Park (Hazelnut Grove Campground).  Sites are booked for camping.  We will have access to the shoreline and will also be exploring scenarios along the shoreline in addition to the trails.

COST:  $295+gst  (INCLUDES campsite fees.  Does not include Provincial Park Pass)

40hr RECERTIFICATION:  If you need to RECERTIFY a current 40 hour certificate –  Please register here as well.  If you are not a Back40 Alumni we will need to verify your certification.

WHAT TO BRING?

Students will be expected to be self-sufficient for the course.  Food, water, personal clothing needs, etc.  A “DAY PACk” of sorts that is similar to what you may reasonably take with you on your own outdoor adventures is necessary.  We encourage students to improvise using what they have however Back40 does provide larger equipment to practice with like tarps, sleeping bags, and ground pads.

Students WILL NEED to be prepared to spend the days outside.  Regardless of the weather.  For all day rain events we will try to organize an indoor space – but you might also end up under tarps!

Students will also be required to bring/supply “play clothing” that may be used/cut/stained for scenario purposes.  While t-shirts are common – they are UNDER outter layers and generally outer layers are more relevant to scenarios leading to the inside layers.  Please do not wear / bring your name brand / nice clothing for risk of anything being damaged in class during skill practice and scenarios!

Students should be self-sufficient for camping but please do not hesitate to inquire if you need any particular gear!

If you have a personal watercraft like a canoe, kayak or SUP – please bring! As well, bikes are encouraged too.  We will be utilizing what we have available in scenarios.  Shoreline scenarios will absolutely be a part of this event!

A detailed course outline and what to bring will be sent to all participants after registration is complete.

Do you LEAD, GUIDE, or participate in high risk activities in REMOTE places?

No one plans to get hurt.  So when we choose to pursue work or recreation in the outdoors, it is reasonable to assume that a certain amount of risk is always present.  That shouldn’t mean we do not go out and enjoy the thrill of adventure or the beauty of our backcountry.   Being more practically prepared and trusting in your own good sense can have a huge impact on how a backcountry emergency is managed.

This UPGRADE course expands upon the 20hr Remote First Aid to include skills you did not learn in that first course.  It is also focused on decision making and leadership – an essential skill development when you are responsible for other people in the backcountry.

This course is also for those who participate in higher risk activity that can result in more life threatening injuries on the person.  Management of severe trauma in backcountry or remote settings is not simple.  Adding depth to your skill set may increase your confidence and application of solutions when in a traumatic situation.

If you currently have a 20hr Remote First Aid you are eligible to participate in this UPGRADE course to bridge to the 40hr Wilderness First Aid.  You will be certified in the 40hr Wilderness First Aid inc. CPR-C/AED Upgrade

All courses will have a back-up indoor option for when weather is unfavourable for the less active content.  We will ALWAYS have outdoor components even if we are set up indoors for some of the content.

What to Bring?

We ask that each participant bring a “day pack” that would be similar to what you would carry on a day trip or work trip outdoors so that you can use items you would likely have with you.  There is no wrong way to do anything when you are improvising.
